web Decluttering

I’m selling my old iPod online (mytronics.com, thirty bucks or so, better than it could be), so I hooked it up to make sure it works, and I was unprepared for the emotion of seeing this on my desktop for the first time in ages.

This iPod was a gift from my brother for my 30th birthday, a complete surprise when we saw each other in November, two months after my actual birthday. I bought my first Mac (a Powerbook G4) not long after that, and I probably wouldn’t have had I not had this wonderful first iPod.

This iPod was the second thing I named in my Buffy-themed computer naming scheme, after calling that first Powerbook “Willow” and before naming my old “Angel” (because of its tendency to turn evil from time to time). The name Willow has been inherited by the MacBook Pro that replaced the Powerbook, and the newer printer being Giles, “Angel” and “Angelus” have been reused. They’re now the two halves of my backup drive. And my newer iPod is named Lorne.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to reuse “Xander.” Even though this iPod has been in a box near my desk for almost two years (Lorne arrived in April of 2006), it seems strangely hard to get rid of it. Sort of like selling your first car.
