kids a story about Max

I took these three pictures of Max yesterday, and they just keep getting funnier. Especially the middle one.

All photos are visible here.

First, he examined some of my remote controls. This is normal. Note the blank black TV screen behind him.

Then he yelled at them. This is not normal, but it was hilarious. Note the TV screen is still black.

Apparently it worked, because look at what happened after he selected one.

kids From Lisa today

We spent 15 minutes after dinner the other night playing Josie’s latest game, which consists of the following:

JOSIE: Say “Cheese”!

LISA/DAVID: Cheese!

JOSIE: Kozeyereyes!

(LISA/DAVID complies.)

JOSIE: Now make a wish!

(LISA/DAVID complies, wishing out loud for Josie to do something, which she does immediately, at which point, we start all over again.)

shopping Sunday

Sunday I went to Babies R Us with Lisa and David (and Neva and Jo) and got Timber some presents (one big thing, lots of little things, and I can’t find a lot of the good ones online). Lisa picked them all out, and I mean all of them. I did nothing. Lisa even got Timber a present from Lisa. They’ve never even met! I feel kinda bad about the way this worked out, but whatever. Not like I know what Timber will actually need, and I never would have thought of some of the great stuff Lisa put in the cart (rash ointment on a stick like deodorant? brilliant!).

Then we went to Lowe’s, where David helped me buy “natural light” (6500K) fluorescent lights for the kitchen. Check off another thing I’d never learned to buy before, and my kitchen is no longer dark. Bliss.

Then we went to Costco, where I bought a membership somewhat on a whim. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time, and probably not worth it at all, but it was kinda fun anyway to walk around the store. I then discovered they sell DVDs. This was bad. I bought Sin City, The Incredibles, and three seasons of Friends. Oh well. At least now that I’m OFFICIALLY unemployed and destitute, I’m entertained.

general Reasons

I feel lonely, in addition to the aforementioned general numbness (which really hasn’t stopped). I don’t really understand it. I love being alone, and I really like not working, but maybe I’d gotten used to seeing and talking to people every day.

In any case, there should only be one more day of it. I should be back working on Monday.

It doesn’t really explain why I’m not getting any email from my friends, though. Any idea why that is? Did I do something awful again?

I went to Target today (bought my first vacuum cleaner in five years). I was so bizarrely fascinated by all the “Back to College” stuff in the furniture and decor sections (apparently brown is the new black) that I forgot to check the registry and get Timber a baby shower gift. Stupid. So I’ll have to go back tomorrow or over the weekend or sometime next week, before I go to Florida Thursday night. I also have to get my nails done before I go, but that’s not really important.

What should I get her? She’s registered at Babies R Us, too. They seem to be going for a theme evenly split between Pooh and frogs, with an emphasis on green. I think it’s a girl, but Timber would never go for a house full of pink stuff (this is her sofa, after all), so it’s hard to tell from the list. Maybe they don’t even know yet.

I’m leaning toward this. So cute. Although Lisa has one of these, and I know it’s way more practical. Maybe I’ll get both. Real diaper bag and toy diaper bag.

I also have to remember to take them their wedding presents I’ve had in my foyer for eight months.

general ch-ch-ch-changes

It’s soooooo cold in my office and sooooooo hot outside. Both suck.

I want to go to Hawaii very, very badly. Can I? I can? YAY.

I spent the night at Lisa’s last night, because we were watching TV and catching up (we haven’t seen each other in almost two weeks), and before we really knew it it was 1 in the morning. So I got up at 7:30 when she and the girls got up (I usually roll out of bed around 9:45), and I got to work an hour and a half early. No one said anything. So odd.

It was cute being awakened, though. Lisa came into the spare bedroom in a towel, and Josie was with her in her pajamas, and Josie jumped (well, was lifted) up on the bed to wake me up. She had a stuffed Very Hungry Caterpillar with her. Both kids were delighted to see me after such a long time. Their faces just lit up when they saw me. I was so happy.

However, NOW I am not, as it is about four degrees up in this bitch. Why do boys need it so cold?!

kids More from Lisa

Dinner conversation last night:

JOSIE: “Mumma?”

ME: “Yes, Jo?”

JOSIE: “Woss apaw a time, dare was a bootiful prissess mermaid.”

ME: “What happened to her?”

JOSIE: “She lubbed a duck!”

kids I meant to post this when it happened, but I forgot.

One day last week I had my computer with me while I was over at Lisa’s. I was sitting at the dining room table, and Josie was opposite me. We were talking about fruit. I think she was being offered a banana, and did not want one. It is a known fact that she likes bananas, so we must have been talking about that.

On a whim, I pointed to the back of my computer, which looks like this…

… and said the words one says most often to Jo: “What’s that?” (Josie is not quite two. Every word is new. “What’s that?” and “What’s this?” are the backbone of her conversations.)

“Josie, what’s that?”

“Apple.”

This amazed me. It’s not a photograph or even a drawing. It’s not three-dimensional. It has a bite out of it. It’s stylized. Most importantly (I think), it’s not red. But she got it. Instantly. “Apple.” Like, “ask me a hard one now.”

kids Photos are up.

115 new pics are on my site from a couple of fun days with the Sedlaks. A couple of highlights, if you like:

technology Children understand digital cameras.

I am at Lisa’s, for it is Wednesday. I’m waiting patiently while they put the girls to bed. From the time I got here, a little less than an hour ago, until bedtime began in earnest, about fifteen minutes ago, we played. It was fun. I have my camera with me, specifically for this possibility. I’m kind of tired of taking pictures of Max. He doesn’t do a whole lot yet. 🙂

And I still can’t really get out of work early enough to make it to the Mall well before sunset. Those days are near, though! Be prepared for a repeat of the late summer of ’03, when I was all about the D.C. tourism. This year I plan to hit some not-yet-photographed-by-me places like Meridian Hill Park and the National Cathedral. There will also be pictures of the Basilica from Meg’s graduation next month. The insides of the museums, however, are still really hard to get to before they close on weekdays.

So I thought I’d take pictures of Neva and Josie today. However, both Neva and Josie seem to understand that nowadays you can see the picture right after it’s taken, and both of them spent the picture-taking time doing this:

Me: Smile!

Child: *smiles*

Me: *pushes the button*

Camera: *focuses, causing a split-second delay*

Child: (during delay) I wanna see the picture! [Neva]; Piccah! [Josie]

Child: *begins to run around to my side of the camera to see the picture*

Camera: *takes picture*

Me: *dies*

Child: *laughs uproariously*

All I wanted was close-ups, which made this difficult, as there was not a lot of wiggle room in the framing. I was lying on the floor. I did get some good ones, but I took about thirty blurry, very close close-ups of very small faces. The good ones will be on my site by this weekend.

Alecia, I hope you’re happy.

P.S. There are pictures of Lisa and David too … I know some of you probably wonder about them.

P.P.S. I forgot Julie’s met them.
