Hand-cranked Socks — Grand Old Flag Wool Knit Crew Socks — Size Medium

It was hard to get The Farmer to stop long enough to get a photo for the Artists Exposed series. It's late summer, a busy time on the farm! So I had to settle for a photo of him at work outside. Sock making is wintertime work, and has to wait when the weather is nice. Thanks to Vicki Diane for the Artists Exposed idea.

We started with the sheep for these socks. All year long we care for the sheep and let the wool grow. Our sheep get one haircut per year. We sent the raw fleece from our Polypay sheep to a woolen mill here in Michigan, where they cleaned it, carded it, blended it with nylon and spun it into DK weight yarn (70% wool/30% nylon).

We then handpainted the yarn with colorfast dyes in shades of red and blue. This is the only skein of yarn we dyed in this manner. Then Mike used the yarn to knit this pair of wool socks on our ancient circular sock knitting machine (actual age unknown).

These socks would fit a woman's size 9-11 foot. They would also fit a man with shoe size of 7-9. The bottom of each sock measures approximately 9.25" at rest. The top of each sock features a comfortable doubled hem with mock ribbing on the shaft. Each shaft measures approximately 11". This pair of socks is sure to be warm for those cold winter days!

Handwashing or machine washing on gentle cycle is suggested. Lay flat to dry.
