technology massive discovery

OH MY GOD.

Did you know that if you highlight a table column in InDesign and set a decimal tab, you don’t have to actually HIT tab in each cell, it just magically aligns them?

Knowing this a week or two ago would have saved me HOURS. Fuckery.

iTunes is playing Wishin’ and Hopin’ by Dusty Springfield. I gave this 3 stars, and I’ve played it 43 times.

general new photos are in

So refresh to your heart’s content.

They’re almost all a lot darker than I’d like, but I’ll get used to it.

My favorites are the bike on the beach—that’s in Newport, California—and the bonsai tree. That’s at the National Arboretum. That exhibit is amazing. My parents and I were there last May. You’d think you’d get tired of looking at so many tiny trees, but every one is different. And they’re not that tiny; the one in the photo is about three feet tall. Some are literally hundreds of years old, trained by generations of gardeners in Japan and given as diplomatic gifts to long-gone presidents. Here’s a link to their virtual tour. The tree I used is in slide #35, in the conservatory, but not in their picture. Many of the other photos I took that day are also of trees represented in the virtual tour.

The Capitol Columns, subjects of another new picture in the rotation, are also at the National Arboretum.

general a little sun through the clouds, already

You all just made my day so much better by complimenting the pictures. I’m definitely going to add more.

thank you.

PS No clue what the hell is up with the blacklist errors. Gonna try uninstalling and reinstalling that plugin and clearing its log and see if that helps. Sorry.

I just hate everything. Why are weekends so short? Why does it have to take so long to get to work in the car and on the bus and on the train and so long again in reverse to get home? Why is bearing my office so, so, so hard, that it’s a struggle to make myself go? Why does it have to be so, so cold outside and so, so windy and wet?

I’m just so sad and I hate it. I feel like I’m failing at everything. I can’t even write a rent check and be sure it’ll clear. I’ll never be able to afford to go away this summer. I’m always terrified my friends are tired of me and that when I don’t call for a week they just breathe a sigh of relief. My house is so filthy and I can’t seem to do anything about it no matter how hard I try. There are hours and hours and hours of television recorded and it feels like so much of a commitment to sit down and watch something worthwhile.

It’s so, so cold outside, and it’s just always, always, always dark. I feel like I haven’t seen the sun in years. It’s always dark. It’s dark when I leave work. It’s dark when I get home. It’s dark for the three or four hours I can spend to live my actual life before I have to go to bed and do it again in the morning. It’s not dark in the morning, but I’m only really outside for a few minutes, maybe a total all-told of ten minutes a day. And it’s so cold it doesn’t matter if the sun is out, because it doesn’t do any good.

And I lent Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell to Lin and I can’t believe I did. I’m risking not getting it back. The house feels empty without it.

I can’t even think of anything remotely amusing to say.

media amusingness

I’m watching Baby Blues, which is a TV show based on the comic strip. It’s from the very beginning of the strip’s chronology, when Zoe was a baby and before Hammie and Wren were born.

It’s a cartoon for grownups. It’s very funny and much, much dirtier than the comic strip. I’m not sure why I didn’t become aware of it until recently, but I have the tv set up to record it whenever it comes on.

In any case, the mother’s voice (Wanda) is Julia Sweeney from Saturday Night Live, and in this episode I was just watching, there was a joke at the expense of an extended family member who speaks only in old SNL catchphrases. Darryl (father): “I’m Paaattt.” Wanda: “Shut up.” Heavy-handed subtlety.

Anyway, funnier was later in the show when a neighbor couple says “No! Tony Robbins is a nut! We’re Moonies.” Closed-captioning: “We’re Scientologists.”

I’m working on changing this page so that the photo on the right is random, from some of the best photos I’ve taken. It will also link to the relevant photo page on DPChallenge, just because I can. Hopefully I’ll be able to expand the selection as time progresses.

general oops

I totally forgot to mention that last night I got three strikes in a row. In the same game I also had another strike and two spares.

We played four games and I won them all.

I’m just sayin’.

This is my favorite of the linked pictures. It shows the cauldron in the graveyard. There are masked Death Eaters in this picture (I assume the blond one is Lucius), and there’s a weird minifig with a glowing ghost head. I’m not sure whether that’s supposed to be Voldemort, as his head is supposed to be red. In any case, it’s a great picture. The low angle makes it look almost like a real place, and the position behind the fence of the point of view makes it look like we’ve snuck in. Yes, I know it’s just Lego!

web war, after all, is the biggest fucking omelet there is.

general general update

Last night Lin and Matt and I went out to Applebee’s and then bowling. There was a really young guy (“twenty-two–and a half!”) on the lane next to us, and he got it into his head (or his gang tattoos) that he and Lin would make a nice couple. Cough.

We went back to Lin’s, as neither Matt and I was really okay to drive home, and we watched TV with only minimal success. Eventually I just went through their cable ondemand thing and started playing X-Men 2. We had the sound down so far we couldn’t hear any of the dialogue. It was surprisingly easy to follow anyway. I dozed off for about forty minutes in the middle and left before it was over. I didn’t get home until four o’clock in the morning.

I had leftover ribs from Applebee’s for lunch just now. Yum.

I’m still coughing. It’s been more than a week. I don’t feel sick at all, just like there’s congestion in my chest. It’s more annoying than anything else. I never get coughs so I don’t really know what to do for it.

OfficeMax has a leather recliner with an ottoman on sale for $69 with free shipping. I really need a tv-watching chair, and I am sorely tempted by this deal. If it’s still gettable on Tuesday when I get paid, I think I’m going to order one. Slickdeals.net has lots of stuff like this. Lots of great things for free-after-rebate or cheap.
